Murray Cod Country: A Houseboat Fishing Week

February 23, 2026 24 views

A week on the Murray on a houseboat targeting cod is a different kind of fishing trip. No driving at dawn, no sleeping in a tent. Just the river, the lures, and time.

The Setup

We hired a houseboat out of Echuca for six nights β€” four anglers, one boat, enough food for ten days because nobody wanted to drive into town. The Murray between Echuca and the SA border is classic cod country: deep timber snags, undercut clay banks, rocky points at the mouths of tributary creeks.

Fishing the Timber

Murray cod live in and around structure. You cast to the edge of a snag, run the lure along the timber face, and either connect or don't. Large shallow-diving hardbodies in natural colours work consistently β€” perch patterns, shrimp patterns, dark natural tones. Surface lures at dawn produce some of the most violent takes in freshwater fishing: a cod of any size hitting a surface lure at first light is not something you forget.

We fished morning and evening sessions primarily, spending the middle of the day moving to new water, eating lunch on the deck, and occasionally catching cod without really trying while drifting to the next spot.

What We Caught

Seven cod across the week, ranging from a small 48cm fish that was barely legal to a legitimate 82cm fish that took a large paddle-tail soft plastic worked slowly along a deep clay bank on the third evening. All were photographed and returned β€” cod are a managed species and worth protecting.

Golden perch (yellowbelly) filled the gaps between cod sessions. Reliable, hard-fighting, and excellent eating β€” we kept a couple for the evening meal on two occasions.

The River at Night

The Murray at night, moored to a red gum on a quiet reach with no traffic and no noise except the occasional splash of a fish β€” this is something available to everyone who is willing to organise it. It does not require expense or expertise. It requires showing up.

Surface lures become effective when the water warms, but during our autumn week, the fish stayed deep near the snags.

The key is positioning your boat at the right distance from structure. Too close and you spook the fish; too far and your lure won't track through the strike zone. We found 15-20 metres from the timber gave us the best casting angles whilst keeping the noise down.

Working the snag systematically is crucial. Start from the upstream end and cast parallel to the structure, letting the current help your retrieve. The Jackall Squirrel 79 on Amazon proved deadly in Natural Perch colour, running at just the right depth to tick the timber without snagging constantly. At around $25-30, it's worth having several in different colours.

Reading the Water Like a Local

Murray cod positioning changes throughout the day, and understanding Murray cod behaviour patterns made the difference between feast and famine. Early morning saw fish holding tight to vertical banks where the water dropped off quickly. These spots warm first as the sun hits the clay faces, and baitfish congregate in the gentle eddies.

Mid-morning, cod moved to deeper snags in 4-6 metre holes. The sounder showed them suspended just off the bottom, relating to the timber but not hard against it. This is when reaction baiting worked best β€” burning a spinnerbait past their nose or ripping a lipless crankbait through their zone.

Afternoon brought the fish back to shallower structure as water temperatures peaked. Rocky banks with scattered timber became productive, especially where small creeks entered the main river. These confluence points hold tremendous amounts of bait, and mature cod patrol them religiously. Successful reading the water skills helped us identify these productive zones quickly.

Tackle That Handles the Heat

Murray cod fishing demands gear that can handle sudden, violent encounters. A 7'6" medium-heavy baitcaster rod with a fast taper gives you the backbone to winch fish from timber whilst maintaining enough tip sensitivity to detect subtle takes. Paired with a high-speed reel spooled with 20lb fluorocarbon, this combination handles 95% of Murray cod scenarios.

The Shimano Curado MGL 151 on Amazon became our workhorse reel, priced around $280-320. Its compact frame and 7.4:1 gear ratio let you pick up slack quickly when fish ran toward the boat β€” a common cod tactic that catches many anglers off guard.

Fluorocarbon leader material is non-negotiable. The water clarity in many Murray reaches demands invisible presentation, and fluoro's abrasion resistance helps when fish wrap you around timber. We used 30lb Sunline Super FC Sniper for our leader material, stepping up to 40lb around particularly gnarly snags.

Night Fishing Magic

The real magic happened after dark. Murray cod are ambush predators, and they use darkness to their advantage, moving into surprisingly shallow water to feed. Surface lures that barely whispered during daylight became fish magnets once the sun disappeared.

Large walk-the-dog style surface lures in dark colours created disturbance that cod couldn't ignore. The secret is working them painfully slowly β€” two twitches, long pause, two more twitches. Most strikes came during the pause, often announced by a massive boil rather than a traditional surface explosion.

Positioning becomes even more critical at night. We anchored the houseboat in deeper water and used electric motors to drift into casting range of structure. The quiet approach let us work areas that would be impossible to fish effectively during the day.

Moon phases played a significant role in our success rates. The new moon period produced the most consistent action, with fish feeding aggressively from sunset until well past midnight. Full moon nights were harder work, requiring more subtle presentations and longer pauses between lure movements.

Cooking Your Catch Properly

Murray cod are outstanding table fare when handled correctly from hook to plate. The key is immediate dispatch and icing β€” these fish deteriorate quickly in warm weather. We kept a slurry of ice and water in a large esky, bleeding fish quickly and getting them on ice within minutes of landing.

Filleting technique matters tremendously when planning multi-day fishing trips like this one, where fresh fish needs to last several days in the esky.

res become productive around dawn and dusk when the water temperature drops and cod move shallow to hunt. ## Water Reading and Location Strategy Reading Murray cod water isn't rocket science, but it does require patience. The best cod spots combine three elements: structure, current, and depth variation. We found our most productive fishing along outside bends where the current had carved deep holes adjacent to fallen timber. These areas typically held multiple fish, with smaller cod occupying the shallower edges while larger specimens lurked in the deeper pockets. Temperature stratification plays a crucial role during warmer months. Use a quality fish finder like the [Garmin Striker 4 Fishfinder](AMAZON_LINK) ($180-220) to identify thermoclines and fish-holding structure. Murray cod often suspend at specific temperature breaks, particularly during the heat of the day. Rocky banks at creek mouths proved consistently productive, especially where tributaries entered the main river. These areas concentrate baitfish and provide ambush points for hungry cod. Focus on the current seams where fast and slow water meet β€” cod position themselves in the slack water but dart into the current to feed. ## Seasonal Timing and Weather Patterns Our September trip coincided with pre-spawn feeding when cod are most aggressive. Water temperatures between 16-20Β°C trigger peak activity levels. Overcast conditions with light wind consistently outproduced bright, calm days. Atmospheric pressure changes also influence cod behaviour β€” falling pressure often triggers feeding frenzies while high pressure can shut down the bite completely. Moon phases matter more than many anglers realise. New moon periods produce the most consistent results, while full moon nights can make day fishing challenging as cod feed heavily after dark. Plan your trip timing accordingly and consider night fishing sessions during bright moon phases. ## Tackle and Technique Refinement Heavy baitcaster setups handle the demands of cod fishing better than spinning gear. Pair a 7'6" heavy action rod with a quality baitcaster like the [Shimano Curado K Baitcaster](AMAZON_LINK) ($280-320). Spool with 50-65lb braided line β€” the [PowerPro Super Slick V2](AMAZON_LINK) ($45-65) offers excellent abrasion resistance around timber. Lure presentation requires precision casting and boat positioning. Approach snags from downstream, positioning the boat to cast parallel to the structure rather than directly at it. This allows longer retrieves along the productive zone and prevents spooking fish in shallow water. Vary your retrieve speeds throughout the day. Early morning and late afternoon favour steady, medium-paced retrieves, while midday heat often requires extremely slow presentations with extended pauses. Some of our largest cod struck lures that had been sitting motionless for 10-15 seconds. ## Conservation and Catch Management Murray cod populations have recovered significantly since the introduction of closed seasons and slot limits, but responsible angling practices remain crucial. The current regulations allow one cod between 55-75cm per angler per day, with a closed season from September 1st to November 30th in most waters. Handle cod carefully using rubber-coated landing nets and release tools. Support the fish horizontally, avoid touching the gills, and minimise time out of water. Larger breeding fish contribute disproportionately to population sustainability, making catch and release of trophy specimens particularly important. Water quality monitoring showed interesting patterns throughout our week. Early morning dissolved oxygen levels peaked around timber snags, explaining the consistent dawn bite. Understanding these environmental factors helps predict fish behaviour and maximise fishing time efficiency. ## Planning Your Own Houseboat Adventure Book houseboats well in advance, particularly during peak fishing seasons. Echuca Marine and Moama offer various sized vessels from $1,800-3,500 per week depending on season and boat size. Include a quality esky system, portable fish finder, and backup trolling motor in your equipment list.
