Murray Cod: Understanding the King of Australian Freshwater

February 26, 2026 16 views

Murray cod are Australia's largest freshwater fish and one of the most sought-after sport fish. Here is what you need to know to target them.

About Murray Cod

Maccullochella peelii is endemic to the Murray-Darling Basin β€” found nowhere else on Earth. Long-lived (60+ years), slow-reproducing. Legal minimum 55cm in NSW and Victoria. The large fish you release today took 20–30 years to grow β€” releasing large specimens is essential.

Habitat and Behaviour

Ambush predators beside structure β€” large timber, undercut banks, bridge pylons, rock bars. Water temperature 15–22Β°C produces the most consistent feeding. Spring and autumn are prime seasons in most Murray-Darling waters.

Lure Fishing

Large lures β€” 15–25cm soft plastics, large bladed lures, big surface lures near structure. The surface bite at dawn and dusk is extraordinary β€” a large cod engulfing a surface lure sounds like someone threw a brick in the river.

Bait Fishing

Large yabbies, live shrimp, and cut fresh fish (particularly carp) are all effective. Present near structure and be patient β€” cod take their time before committing.
